Aufgabe | We know that you have worked on Shrek 2.
Could you explain the process of creating these characters?
A character begins with Character Design. Several designs are made of the character to find the one design that best fits the role that character is supposed to play based on the script or storyboards. Once a design is picked, turnaround drawings are made, that is, a drawings of the character in a neutral pose from several angles. A modeler, then builds the character in the computer, by sculpting vertices or vertexes using the turnaround drawing as a schematic to make a polygon mesh of the final model. Once the model is built it is sent to the texture department. First the model is UV Unwrapped. A process where the polygons are translated into a 2D template to use as a base for The textures. Textures are painted on these templates and then put back on the model. This gives the coloring and the detail of the character's look. Next the model is sent to Rigging. The rigger ads joints and bones to the character. This process is extremely complicated and there is no end to the level of detail you can put into a rig. Some rigs have full muscle deformations. I believe Shrek had something like 500 hundred controls just for the face. Once the rig is done it's on to Animation. Here the animator analyzes the storyboard and plans out the actions of the character based on the emotion of the scene. He/She does this by acting the scene out physically several times or by small drawings called thumbnails. Once a plan is made the animator blocks in the shot by making poses of the character that show the direction the animator wants to take the shot in. Once blocking is approved by the director the animation gets opened up. Meaning you ad more key frames between your initial poses, at this stage you start to add more detail to the scene, eye movement, lip sync etc. After this stage is approved you do one final polish pass. This is where you get into the nitty gritty of animation. Detailed movements in the all the body parts, fingers, eyes, eyelids, making the character breath etc. In my opinion this stage can really bring the character to life. Once the Animation is approved it moves on to lighting. The lighting artists places light sources in the scene to create the necessary dramatic effect then the shot is Rendered and output to film.

Hallo,
